I took the stitch sequence from my Alpine Square and worked it up in rows and I love the way it looks.

Alpine Rows 8″ Square

Skill Level

  • Easy

Finished Size

  • 8 x 8 (20.32 cm x 20.32 cm)

Materials

  • 1 oz worsted weight yarn for main color (MC)
  • Small amount of worsted weight yarn in color chosen for joining (JC)
  • K hook (6.5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Gauge

  • 25 sc = 7”
  • First 5 rows = 1 1/2”
  • First 9 rows = 2 1/2”

Stitches and Abbreviations

  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • sc – single crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • st – stitch
  • JC – join color
  • MC – main color
  • RS – right side

Notes

  • Pattern is written in US terms.
  • Pattern is worked in rows, turning after each row.
  • Edging is worked in rounds, not turning after each round.

Main

1: (RS) Ch 26, sc in 2nd chain from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (25 sc)

2: Ch 1, sc in first sc, *dc in next sc, sc in next sc; repeat from * 11 more times. Turn. (13 sc, 12 dc)

3: Ch 1, sc in first sc, skip next dc, *[sc, ch 2, sc] in next sc, skip next dc; repeat from * 10 more times, skip next dc, sc in last sc. Turn. (24 sc, 11 ch-2 spaces)

4: Ch 3 (counts as hdc and ch 1), *sc in next ch-2 space, ch 1; repeat from * 10 more times, hdc in last sc. Turn. (2 hdc, 11 sc, 12 ch-1 spaces)

5: Ch 1, sc in hdc, sc in next ch-1 space, *sc in next sc, sc in next ch-1 space; repeat from * 10 more times, sc in last hdc. Turn. (25 sc)

6 – 25: Repeat rows 2 – 5 five more times. Do not turn after row 25.

Edging:

26: (RS) Ch 1, *3 sc in corner, sc in the end of next 7 rows, 2 sc in end of next row, sc in end of next 7 rows, 2 sc in end of next row, sc in end of next 7 rows, 3 sc in corner, sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in end of next 7 sc; repeat from * 1 more time, join with sl st to first sc. Finish off. (112 sc)

27: With JC and with RS facing, join new yarn with sl st in center sc of any corner 3 sc group, ch 1, *3 sc in corner, sc in next 27 sc; repeat from * 3 more times. Finish off. (120 sc)

Finishing

Weave in loose ends.

If desired, block and press lightly on wrong side, following instructions on yarn label.

To block acrylic yarn pin in place and heavily steam. If using an iron to steam, take extra care not to let the iron touch the acrylic yarn or it will melt. Let dry completely.
