This square uses the same stitch pattern sequence as my Elsa 8″ Square, but is worked in rows instead of rounds, which gives it it’s own unique look.

Skill Level

Size of Finished Square

  • 8″ x 8″ (20.32 cm x 20.32 cm)

Materials

  • 1 oz worsted weight (size 4) yarn in main color (MC)
  • Small amount of worsted weight yarn (size 4) in color chosen to join the squares (JC)
  • Size K hook (6.5mm) or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Yarn/tapestry needle

Gauge

  • 25 sc = 7″
  • First 6 rows = 2″

Stitches and Abbreviations

  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • sc – single crochet
  • st – stitch
  • 3dc cluster – 3 double crochet cluster
  • JC – joining color
  • MC – main color
  • RS – right side

Special Stitches

  • Magic Ring
  • 3dc Cluster – yo, insert hook into space indicated, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, insert hook into same space, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, insert hook into same space, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 4 loops.

  • Pattern is written in US terms
  • Square is worked in rows, turning after each row. Edging is worked in the round, with no turning.

Square

With MC, chain 26.

1: (RS) Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of the next 24 ch. Turn. (25 sc)

2: Ch 1, sc in first sc, *dc in next sc, sc in next sc; repeat from * 11 more times. Turn. (13 sc, 12 dc)

3: Ch 1, sc in first sc, *sc in next dc, sc in next sc; repeat from * 11 more times. Turn. (25 sc)

4: Ch 1, sc in first sc, *ch 1, skip next sc, sc in next sc; repeat from * 11 more times.Turn. (13 sc, 12 ch-1 spaces)

5: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 3dc cluster in next ch-1 space, *ch 1, skip next sc, 3dc cluster in next ch-1 space; repeat from * 10 more times, dc in last sc. Turn. (12 3dc clusters, 2 dc, 11 ch-1 spaces)

6: Ch 1, sc in first dc, *ch 1, skip next 3dc cluster, sc in next ch-1 space; repeat from * 10 more times, ch 1 skip next 3dc cluster, sc in last dc. Turn. (13 sc, 12 ch-1 spaces)

7: Ch 1, sc in first sc, *sc in next ch-1 space, sc in next sc; repeat from * 11 more times.Turn. (25 sc)

Repeat rows 2-7 2 more times, repeat row 2 and 3.

Total of 21 rows

Do not fasten off. Do not turn.

Edging

1: Ch 1, *3 sc in corner, sc in end of next 7 rows, 2 sc in end of next row, sc in end of next 7 rows, 2 sc in end of next row, sc in end of next 7 rows, 3 sc in corner, sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 7 sc; rpeat from * 1 more times, join with sl st to first sc. Finish off. (112 sc)

2: With JC , join with sl st in center sc of any corner 3 sc group, ch 1, 3 sc in same sc as join, sc in next 27 sc, *3 sc in next sc, sc in next 27 sc; repeat from * 2 more times. Finish off. (120 sc)

Finishing

Weave in loose ends.

Block and press lightly on wrong side, following instructions on yarn label.

To block acrylic yarn pin in place and heavily steam. If using an iron to steam, take extra care not to let the iron touch the acrylic yarn or it will melt. Let dry completely.
