I challenged myself to make a more open square, and this is the result. It reminds me a bit of a snowflake.

Materials

  • 1 oz worsted weight yarn in main color
  • K hook (6.5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Gauge

  • 25 sc = 7”
  • First 2 rows = 3”
  • First 4 rows = 4 1/2”

  • ch3/dc – ch 3 double crochet
  • dc – double crochet

Special Stitches

  • dc2tog – yo, insert hook into ch-1 space previously used , yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops, skip next dc, yo, insert hook into next ch-1 space, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, pull through 3 loops.
  • Ch3/dc – ch 3, dc in 3rd ch from hook.

1: (RS) In magic ring, ch 4 (counts as dc and ch 1), *dc, ch 1; repeat from * 6 more times, join with sl st to third ch of beginning ch 4. (8 dc, 8 ch-1 spaces)

2: Sl st into next ch-1 space, ch 2, skip next dc, dc in next ch-1 space (counts as first dc2tog), ch3/dc, *work dc2tog, ch3/dc; repeat from * 6 more times, join with sl st to top of first dc. (8 dc2tog, 8 ch-3/dc)

3: Ch 5 (counts as dc and ch 2), dc in same st as join, ch 2, skip next ch3/dc, *[dc, ch 2, dc] in next dc3tog, ch 2, skip next ch3/dc; repeat from * 6 more times, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 5. (16 dc, 16 ch-2 spaces)

Finishing

Weave in loose ends.

If desired, block and press lightly on wrong side, following instructions on yarn label.

To block acrylic yarn pin in place and heavily steam. If using an iron to steam, take extra care not to let the iron touch the acrylic yarn or it will melt. Let dry completely.
